The Lopdell Precinct is a multi-million dollar arts and cultural development located in Titirangi, West Auckland. At its heart is a premier art gallery. We were engaged to rename and rebrand the gallery to reflect its contemporary vision and place within the precinct.
A consultative process that included strategic workshops with key stakeholders from the arts and community was conducted and the name ‘Te Uru’ was established. The name has both local and cultural significance. For local iwi Te Kawerau a Maki—the predominant wind of the Waitakere area is Te Hau a uru or Te Uru—it is the wind with the greatest mana and power. The name was kindly gifted by Te Kawerau a Maki.
Graphically, the wind is represented by right aligned and italicized typography (coming from the West) giving the brand a windswept feel. The glyph below the wordmark represents the surrounding ranges and forms a W shape symbolising West Wind and Waitakere.
